For more than a century, music fans have debated what is the defining song of the summer. And once again … it’s time to decide.

We may be headed toward cooler weather, but things are about to get heated. The (RED) Song of the Summer competition is BACK, electrified by FIAT. For the third year, we’re asking you to determine what song deserves to be the top song of summer 2024.

2024 Song of the Summer 4-way bracket
The 2024 (RED) Song of Summer – electrified by Fiat

Why is the song of summer important when some music critics have declared it passé? It’s a moment when the globe can speak one language – music. And it has become an annual trend as the discussion captures the global zeitgeist and pop culture in a fixed moment in time.

Remember when “Grease” was the word? Or when you stopped chasing “Waterfalls” and did the “Macarena”? And five years later? Ain’t nobody can tell me nothing about where the “Old Town Road” was but we know we’re going to ride there until we can’t no more.

And even though half the globe is in a different season, there’s a reason why the phrase “come to Brazil” trends every year at this time on the calendar.

List Selection Process

This brings us to the (RED) Song of Summer and why it is unique to other song of summer picks.

It’s not selected by a group of music insiders picking niche favorites which never have you ever nor will ever hear. And the list isn’t simply the Billboard Hot 100.

The (RED) Song of Summer is the only “song of summer” process that is algorithmically curated, analytically based and selected by you the listener, electrified by Fiat.

It’s data from streaming platforms like Apple Music, charts like Billboard, social sentiment and virality that crosses cultures and borders. Then (RED) gives you the opportunity to vote for the title of “Song of the Summer.”

How does it work? We’ve got a March Madness-style bracket to poll the top songs round by round on X, until we determine just one winner. This year’s poll consists of 32 songs, 41 artists and the summer’s biggest hits and fan-favorites from years past.

The (RED) 2024 Song of Summer List & Categories

This year we have a new media partner. @ChartData, the largest independent music chart data provider, will be supporting round-by-round. And for you, we’ve curated the list into four seeded/weighted brackets.

Sunshine Vibes
The biggest bops & needle drops on repeat
Ex. Chappell Roan’s #1 “Good Luck, Babe!” or Kendrick Lamar’s diss track in a-minor “Not Like Us”

Unique Pleasures
Viral bops crossing countries, connecting cultures keeping it 500
Ex. ian’s TikTok trending song “Magic Johnson” or kpop bop “Who” by Jimin

Electric Ladies
Who run the world in an apple.d.brat summer?
Ex. Charli xcx’s “360” & Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please”

Throwback Magic
Remember that song? We do. It’s forever young.
Ex. #tbt to *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” and “Freedom” by Beyoncé feat. Kendrick Lamar

Who will be ultimate winner? Start here on X/Twitter @RED.

Special thanks to (RED) partner Fiat. #KeepIt500

Previous years: 2023 | 2022

Last summer, you chose Seven by Jungkook feat. Latto as the top song of the summer, but this year’s crown is still up for grabs! What song defined your summer 2024?

After the strong response last year, we knew we had to ask again. And so, back by popular demand, (RED) posed an easy but divisive question to our followers… what track should be crowned 2023’s Song of the Summer? The poll honed in on 32 songs involving 41 musical artists, and featured the summer’s biggest hits as well as some write-ins and fan-favorites from years past.

A whopping five tracks from the Barbie soundtrack made the bracket, as well as two Taylor Swift songs (Anti-Hero and Throwback winner Cruel Summer). A cover also made an appearance, although voters couldn’t decide between Luke Combs’ or Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car.

At the end of the polling, nearly a quarter of a million votes had been cast. We heard from 10 million people across six continents, sounding off on the tunes that cut through the summer heat. Okay, okay, we’ll stop blabbing and reveal the victor. Drumroll please! The winner of the 2023 Song of the Summer, electrictrified by (FIAT)ᴿᴱᴰ is…

⚡ Seven – Jungkook feat. Latto⚡

Huge congrats to Jungkook and Latto for clinching the top spot! We’d also be remiss if we didn’t mention that this is Jungkook’s second year making an appearance as our Song of the Summer Winner, although last year it was as a featured artist. In 2022, voters elected  Left and Right, by Charlie Puth, BTS, and Jung Kook as the season’s biggest bop.

There’s only one question left… any ideas on who will be dropping the greatest hit next summer? We’ll see you all next year to find out!

Months shy of graduating from University of Wolverhampton, Tolu “Eros” Erogbogbo took a leap of faith. At age 21, he decided to follow his love for food, drop out of college and return home to Lagos, Nigeria to open his very own restaurant.

“My food has always brought people together,” said Erogbogbo. “And then I realized that food was not only my passion, but my purpose.”

Today, Erogbogbo is known around the world by a different name: Chef Eros or “The Billionaire Chef.” His cooking has taken him from Lagos to Los Angeles where he now works as the Executive Chef and Founder of ILÉ PDR, a West African private dining experience in Hollywood and ILÉ Bistro, an elevated casual offshoot of ILÉ PDR, which debuted inside Citizen Public Market March 2023.

Last month, Chef Eros added another title to his impressive resume: (RED)UCATOR, where he will use his global platform to amplify (RED)’s mission to fight AIDS and the injustices that allow it to thrive.

(RED) and Chef Eros have exciting collaborations in development, but the work has already started with Chef Eros using his private dining experience in Los Angeles as a platform to share (RED)’s mission.

“It is such an honor to be the first African Chef to join the (RED) family. I have always dreamt of a day when my work could be used for good and to make an impact. Now that I am able to use my voice as a (RED)UCATOR and to support what (RED) is doing, it is such an exciting moment for me,” said Chef Eros. “We are just getting started!”

Chef Eros joins fellow (RED)UCATORS, including athlete Carl Nassib, actors Damson Idris, Dayo Okeniyi, and Lexi Underwood, as well as longtime supporters, chef Hong Thaimee, actor Javier Muñoz and comedian Phoebe Robinson.

“We are honored to have Chef Eros as part of our exceptional group of (RED)UCATORS. His creativity, passion and culinary talent is going to supercharge our work and bring a new level of awareness and urgency to our fight against AIDS,” said Jennifer Lotito, President and COO, (RED).

Over the past 18 years, (RED) and its family of partners including: Apple, Anova, Ember, Fiat Panasonic and many more, have generated over $760 million for the Global Fund and impacted 290 million lives. (RED)UCATORS like Chef Eros are invaluable to helping (RED) cook up incredible activations and awareness that help save lives.

Today is International Podcast Day, so listen up!

With everything going on in the world right now, there has never been a more important time to get informed on social justice issues. Luckily, podcasts make it easy to educate yourself.

Next time you’re cooking dinner, folding laundry, or going for a walk, pop on your (BEATS)RED headphones and check out these 5 insanely binge-able social justice podcasts.

1. Code Switch

Hosted by journalists of color, NPR’s Code Switch examines the various ways in which race impacts society—from the books we read, to the games we play, the makeup we wear, the food we eat, and so much more. Code Switch brings humor and empathy to some of the most difficult conversations about race.

2. Pod Save the People

DeRay McKesson first entered the national consciousness in 2014 as a formidable organizer for Black Lives Matter after the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. Now, as the host of Crooked Media’s Pod Save the People, he’s emerged as one of the most important voices in social justice today. Premiered in 2017, the hour-long show features weekly analysis from Kaya Henderson and De’Ara Balenger and covers stories affecting those in and out of the headlines.

3. Intersectionality Matters

Lawyer, civil rights advocate, and leading scholar of critical race theory Kimberlé Crenshaw brings her expertise and insight to Intersectionality Matters. The podcast explores a range of topics from grassroots activism abroad to #SayHerName through the lens of intersectionality. All while interviewing world-class artists, activists, and scholars.

4. From Our Own Correspondent (BBC)

Social justice isn’t just about seeking equality for those around you; it’s about pursuing justice for those out of view and oceans away. In fact, much of the journey for unconditional equality and human rights for all is simply learning about what is happening around the world. From Our Own Correspondent, produced by BBC, showcases issues long out of focus in the headlines that affect millions around the world.

5. Attitudes!

For Erin Gibson and Brian Safi ‘Attitudes!’ is an art form and platform. The two fuse pop culture with women’s rights and LGBTQ issues to concoct a social justice cocktail that goes down smoothly (well, that is if you’re not choking from laughter at their debauchery along the way).

6. UNDISTRACTED

“Enough with the distractions, the noise, the billions of tweets. We got work to do, and we’re going to do it together, and we’re going to find our joy along the way. We are undistracted.” -Brittany Packnett Cunningham, host of UNDISTRACTED (and former (INSIDE THE PARENS) panelist). In this weekly podcast, Cunningham and her guests dive into today’s headlines and other pressing issues through the lens of intersectional feminism.

For the first time in the 16-year history of (RED) we are tackling a truly controversial and divisive topic – “the song of the summer” – but we’re asking you for help.

Sure the song of the summer is often an annual argument held between fans and stans of artists looking for bragging rights for their respective favs. But in recent years, the idea has gained a certain cache and now even the artists seemingly have been aiming to be the song you think of first when you get into the car or the club.

So this year, (RED) is wading into these waters with your help and electrified by Fiat. We have devised a competition-style tournament with the top contenders for 2022 Song of the Summer. And in case we forgot any song, across social media we’ll hold play-in sing-in votes where you can vote for songs that trended on those platforms or write in any songs that you believe should be the “Song of the Summer” – our (RED) Round. And again, it’s not only songs that have been popular this summer but it’s also new songs that capture the 2022 mood or the jams you love that more people should hear.

So ready to vote? Let’s go. Dolce vita.

Priced at $1,200, the Ed Rushca (RED)ITION is in a limited-edition run of 500, each signed and numbered. 100% of sales will go to (RED), where the net proceeds raised will support the fight for equitable access to COVID relief in the world’s most vulnerable communities. Doubling the impact, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will generously match every dollar raised for the Global Fund.

Here are 5 cool ways to wear your favorite silk scarf:

Western Knot

  1. Fold the scarf diagonally into a triangle.
  2. Fold over the longest side and loosely wrap it around your neck, crossing the ends behind.
  3. Bring the ends to the front and tie them into a knot beneath the chin! You can tuck the knot under your scarf or over, it’s totally up to you.

The French Twist

  1. Lay the scarf on a flat surface and roll it all the way.
  2. Wrap it around your neck, crossing the ends from behind and bringing it to the front.
  3. Use the ends to tie a knot beneath the chin and shift the scarf to either side. Make a second knot leaving the loose strands to hang and voilà!

Head Bandana

  1. Fold the scarf into a triangle and place the longest part of the scarf over your head.
  2. Then, tie a knot at the back of your neck, behind the ears. They say silk on hair does wonders, so not only does it make a great hair accessory but it’ll also be non-damaging to your hair!

Shoulder Wrap

  1. Fold the scarf into a triangle and wrap it behind your shoulders.
  2. Bring the ends to the front, then criss-cross the ends to make a knot.

Purse Accent

  1. Roll the scarf and wrap it around your purse’s handle strap.
  2. Tie a knot to instantly add a special touch.

To close out Pride 2021, we’re highlighting Laetitia Charles-Belamour, a.k.a. Mlle Belamour: the INC(RED)IBLE illustrator behind one of our best-selling (RED) Originals Pride collection designs. Her beautiful “DESI(RED)” illustration is available as a T-shirt, tank top, hoodie, tote, and pillow—all of which are for sale on Amazon.com/RED. Take a moment to get to know Mlle Belamour.

A young Black woman from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, Belamour decided to follow her dreams and create her own art after working as an art director in Paris. Today, as an entrepreneur, she balances her passion for art with her role as a mother.

Though you’d never know it from the looks of her design, the (RED) Originals Pride collection was actually Belamour’s first experience designing merch. To her, the collaboration was about so much more than developing a new skill—it was an opportunity to use her work as a force for good. As she put it, “If I can share more love to the world by illustrating my vision of people often oppressed, I will.”

To Belamour, Pride is all about unity and love. Her “DESI(RED)” design is intended to exude love and acceptance regardless of race and gender.

As discussed during (RED)’s recent (INSIDE THE PARENS) panel, the LGBTQ+ community continues to be disproportionately impacted by pandemics like AIDS and COVID. Gay men are 26 times more likely than heterosexual men and transgender people are 13 times more likely than any other population to contract HIV—and COVID is only worsening this gap, as social, economic, and other health factors continue to put global LGBTQ+ communities at greater risk of infection.

Every purchase of Mlle Belamour’s “DESI(RED)” design, or any other design in the (RED) Originals Pride Collection, goes to support (RED)’s campaigns focused on generating funds and awareness for the fight against pandemics.
