Recent executive orders from the United States administration have raised questions and alarm over global health and the HIV/AIDS fight. With policy rhetoric shifting to an “America First” mentality, many are also curious why the U.S. should support other countries, financially or otherwise. Here is why it’s critically important for the U.S. to continue to support foreign aid programs.

1. Global Health & Pandemic Prevention

Diseases do not respect geopolitical borders. Investing in global health initiatives helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases like Ebola, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and COVID-19. Treatment and prevention through health programs not only save lives abroad, but also protect Americans by reducing the likelihood of disease outbreaks reaching U.S. borders.

2. Humanitarian & Moral Responsibility

Providing humanitarian aid to others is in the DNA of American history. The U.S. has long positioned itself as a leader in defending human rights and democracy. Providing aid during global crises reflects American values of compassion and responsibility, and creates a favorable image of the U.S. to the rest of the world.

3. National Security

Helping to stabilize regions by addressing poverty, disease, and lack of education can mitigate conditions that lead to extremism, conflict, and mass migration. By investing in development, the U.S. helps create stable governments that are less likely to become threats to themselves and other countries.

4. Economic Benefits

When developing countries grow economically, they become better trade partners for the U.S. Foreign aid programs can jump-start local economies, creating markets for American goods and services and, in turn, providing lasting returns on investment.

5. Creating & Strengthening Diplomatic Allyship

Partnerships with countries that receive U.S. aid are not one-sided. Aid fosters goodwill and stronger diplomatic ties with recipient countries, making them more likely to support U.S. policies on international issues. The strategic partnerships that emerge from aid can enhance the U.S.’s position on global policies.

6. Cost-Effectiveness Compared to Military Action

If the intent of scaling back aid is to save money, that may only yield a short-term result. In the same way that disease prevention is much more effective and economical than responsive treatment, history shows that investing in development aid is often far cheaper than military intervention. In the long run, addressing instability at its root—by improving governance, infrastructure, and economic opportunities—reduces the need for costly military involvement in the future.

7. Climate Change & Environmental Protection

Climate change already has a dire impact on countries all over the planet, and climate-related crises are forecast to continue worsening. The deadly and costly effects of climate change can only be combatted through a coordinated global effort. By supporting sustainable development abroad, the U.S. also addresses crises locally, such as rising sea levels, destructive storms and fires, and increased migration pressures.

While some critics argue that resources for foreign aid should be spent domestically, the reality is that the budget set aside for aid programs makes up a small fraction of total U.S. spending (less than 1% of the federal budget). Despite its relatively low cost, the impact from these initiatives can be significant in bolstering humanitarian progress, stabilizing regions of unrest, providing economic growth, and preventing climate and health crises—all of which ultimately benefit the U.S.

Song of the Summer 2024 https://www.red.org/reditorial/partnership/the-song-of-the-summer-fiat/ Fri, 06 Sep 2024 19:53:54 +0000 https://www.red.org/?p=6465 The (RED) Song of Summer is the only “song of summer” process that is algorithmically curated, analytically based and selected by you the listener, electrified by Fiat.

It's data from streaming platforms like Apple Music, charts like Billboard, social sentiment and virality that crosses cultures and borders. Then (RED) gives you the opportunity to vote for the title of “Song of the Summer.”

]]>
For more than a century, music fans have debated what is the defining song of the summer. And once again … it’s time to decide.

We may be headed toward cooler weather, but things are about to get heated. The (RED) Song of the Summer competition is BACK, electrified by FIAT. For the third year, we’re asking you to determine what song deserves to be the top song of summer 2024.

2024 Song of the Summer 4-way bracket
The 2024 (RED) Song of Summer – electrified by Fiat

Why is the song of summer important when some music critics have declared it passé? It’s a moment when the globe can speak one language – music. And it has become an annual trend as the discussion captures the global zeitgeist and pop culture in a fixed moment in time.

Remember when “Grease” was the word? Or when you stopped chasing “Waterfalls” and did the “Macarena”? And five years later? Ain’t nobody can tell me nothing about where the “Old Town Road” was but we know we’re going to ride there until we can’t no more.

And even though half the globe is in a different season, there’s a reason why the phrase “come to Brazil” trends every year at this time on the calendar.

List Selection Process

This brings us to the (RED) Song of Summer and why it is unique to other song of summer picks.

It’s not selected by a group of music insiders picking niche favorites which never have you ever nor will ever hear. And the list isn’t simply the Billboard Hot 100.

The (RED) Song of Summer is the only “song of summer” process that is algorithmically curated, analytically based and selected by you the listener, electrified by Fiat.

It’s data from streaming platforms like Apple Music, charts like Billboard, social sentiment and virality that crosses cultures and borders. Then (RED) gives you the opportunity to vote for the title of “Song of the Summer.”

How does it work? We’ve got a March Madness-style bracket to poll the top songs round by round on X, until we determine just one winner. This year’s poll consists of 32 songs, 41 artists and the summer’s biggest hits and fan-favorites from years past.

The (RED) 2024 Song of Summer List & Categories

This year we have a new media partner. @ChartData, the largest independent music chart data provider, will be supporting round-by-round. And for you, we’ve curated the list into four seeded/weighted brackets.

Sunshine Vibes
The biggest bops & needle drops on repeat
Ex. Chappell Roan’s #1 “Good Luck, Babe!” or Kendrick Lamar’s diss track in a-minor “Not Like Us”

Unique Pleasures
Viral bops crossing countries, connecting cultures keeping it 500
Ex. ian’s TikTok trending song “Magic Johnson” or kpop bop “Who” by Jimin

Electric Ladies
Who run the world in an apple.d.brat summer?
Ex. Charli xcx’s “360” & Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please”

Throwback Magic
Remember that song? We do. It’s forever young.
Ex. #tbt to *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” and “Freedom” by Beyoncé feat. Kendrick Lamar

Who will be ultimate winner? Start here on X/Twitter @RED.

Special thanks to (RED) partner Fiat. #KeepIt500

Previous years: 2023 | 2022

Last summer, you chose Seven by Jungkook feat. Latto as the top song of the summer, but this year’s crown is still up for grabs! What song defined your summer 2024?

Can you feel it? The holiday season is upon us! We adore the holidays because they’re not only a chance to show friends and family some love, but also to give meaningful gifts that make a positive impact in the world. This year, we’re taking things to the next level with the (RED) Holiday Edit, a brand-new interactive experience that features 25 days of exclusive announcements, celebrity appearances, product launches, and holiday shopping deals—all of which help save lives.

The (RED) Holiday Edit is your definitive guide to doing good this holiday season. Brimming with unique products and experiences, there’s something for everyone on your nice list. This exciting new campaign is generously supported by Merck (known as MSD outside the U.S. and Canada).

Merck has generously supported (RED) over the past several years during key campaign moments like SHOP (RED) SAVE LIVES, PAINT (RED) SAVE LIVES, and also year-round. Merck’s support of the (RED) Holiday Edit will allow us engage even more holiday shoppers and raise even more money in the fight to end AIDS.

Since the first HIV products became available, Merck has been working tirelessly to expand access to medicines, strengthen health systems, as well as address global health challenges around the world. In addition to their support of (RED), Merck also recently announced a contribution of $200K to the Global Fund’s Africa Frontline First Catalytic Fund.

You know when you have a work event, a friend’s birthday party, a cousin’s baby shower, and tickets to a concert all on the same day? We’ve had a week full of those days here at (RED)!

While world leaders met at the United Nations this week for the 78th UN General Assembly, (RED) also had a packed agenda, with exciting partner announcements, special events, art installations, powerful panel conversations, and a celebration of the progress we’ve made so far in the fight against AIDS.

Let’s take a look back at a few big moments from our busy week!

Fiat Drives Even More Impact

The first stop on our recap is the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), an annual convening for emerging global leaders to create and implement solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges and continue the fight toward climate resilience, health equity, and inclusive economic recovery and growth.

On the second day of the event in Midtown, Manhattan, our partner Fiat announced an extension of its partnership with (RED) with the launch of two new vehicles that support the fight against AIDS—the Fiat 600e in Europe, and the first ever fully-electric vehicle in the US for Stellantis, the Fiat 500e. These vehicles will support life-saving programs that empower health workers and provide prevention, testing, and care in places that need it most.

Live Art That Saves Lives

Just down the hall from the Fiat announcement, CGI attendees were able to stop by a live all-day art installation by Brooklyn-based illustrator and graphic designer Sophia Yeshi. Sophia uses her work to shine a light on Black women, women of color, and people in the LGBTQIA+ community who are bold, dynamic, and demand attention.

Sophia painted (RED)’s iconic parentheses with an eye-catching design that celebrates the power of women and aims to inspire people to join (RED) in the fight to end AIDS.

Celebrating $760M to the Global Fund

To close out an already eventful day, we held another infamous (RED) Nightcap event in partnership with Goals House at Central Park’s iconic Tavern on the Green. Hosted by Chef José Andrés and head of the (RED) Creative Council, Laura Brown, the Nightcap was an opportunity to celebrate (RED) delivering over $760 million to the Global Fund, helping more than 290 million people.

Partners, supporters, (RED)UCATORs, and special guests mingled, danced to a set from DJ Buka, and sipped on specialty cocktails from (RED)’s newest partner, Lobos 1707 Tequila.

Power of Partnership: Extraordinary Action Through Innovation

On Thursday, The Global Fund and (RED) co-hosted a breakfast that brought together (RED)’s partners Merck, Roche, ViiV and IQVIA, as well as other Life Sciences companies and Global Fund partners. The event, which was generously sponsored by Merck, featured powerful conversations that emphasized the importance of partnership in the fight against global health crises and highlighted the extraordinary action and game-changing innovations that will drive progress to end AIDS, TB and malaria by 2030.

Introducing (RED) TV

This week, (RED) also launched (RED) TV, our new livestream series. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the (RED) digital team went live on social media to spotlight the biggest moments of the week and share (RED) news, exclusive interview content, and hot takes. These streams are available to view on (RED)’s X profille, but stay tuned for more (RED) TV content coming soon.

Huge thanks to all of the partners and people who made this week possible!

Over the last 15 years, (RED) partnerships have empowered supporters to EAT (RED), DANCE (RED), SHOP (RED), PAINT (RED), FLY (RED), RIDE (RED), and more to support the fight against pandemics. Now, for the first time ever, get ready to DRIVE (RED).

With COVID threatening years’ worth of progress in the fight against AIDS, there has never been a more important time for companies to step up to join the fight against these global health emergencies. We’re absolutely thrilled to announce (RED)’s first multi-brand automotive partnership with Jeep®, Ram, and FIAT!

These three iconic brands will deliver a minimum of $4 million to support the critical work of the Global Fund over the next three years through the launch of special edition (RED) vehicles.

We couldn’t be prouder to launch this ground-breaking multi-year partnership. The global scale and creative energy this partnership will bring to the fight against COVID and AIDS is exactly what’s needed to help us end the devastating impact on millions of people. On top of providing millions of dollars to the Global Fund to support communities most in need, this partnership will help bring critical awareness to the global health crisis caused by COVID.

Check out the full lineup of special edition (RED) vehicles:

The 2022 Ram 1500 Limited (RAM)RED—based on the Ram 1500 Limited Night—will launch at the end of 2021.
The Fiat New (500)RED electric model is available for ordering now in Europe.
The 2022 (Jeep®)RED Compass special edition will launch in the US in early 2022, followed by the launch of the Jeep® Renegade (Jeep®)RED Renegade shortly after in the US and Canada and later in 2022 in Europe.

What’s different about these vehicles? First, and most importantly, they all fight pandemics! But in terms of features, the FIAT 500, the Jeep® Compass and the Ram 1500 (RED) editions will each have their own unique (RED) brand design cues, both exterior and interior.

In addition to launching these special edition (RED) vehicles, Jeep®, Ram, and FIAT will provide tons of other ways for fans to support the fight against pandemics through co-branded merchandise, events and more.

Thank you, Jeep®, Ram, and FIAT for showing private sector leadership in the fight against pandemics! Now, buckle up, and let’s DRIVE (RED)!
